Thoughts from the front porch

Think about the last really good conversation you had. 

Odds are it wasn't in a conference room. It probably wasn't scheduled at all. It happened somewhere unhurried, like a kitchen table, a long drive, or a porch. It wandered for a while before it got anywhere. And then it took you somewhere real. 

That's been on our minds lately. Blame the heat. The porch after sundown is about the only place worth being right now. (A nod here to two great Texans, Robert Earl Keen and Lyle Lovett, who wrote a whole song about a front porch. They were onto something.) 

Here's the thing about a porch: there's no agenda out there. Nobody's presenting anything. You just sit and talk, and somehow those end up being the conversations that matter. 

We see the same thing in our work. The questions families most need to talk about don’t show up on a formal agenda. They come up on the way out the door, oftentimes starting with "this is probably nothing, but..." It's never nothing. 

Here's a question for your own porch some evening this week: what's your "probably nothing"? The thing you’ve been meaning to bring up. The question you've been sitting on. 

We know the year is more than half over. It doesn't matter. Whatever 2026 was supposed to be, there's still time to make it that for you. The plans you made in January didn't expire. They've just been staying out of the sun, like the rest of us. And the months when those things get done? Those are ahead of us. That's what this fall is for. 

Over the next few weeks, we're sitting down with every family we work with. When it's your turn, bring your "probably nothing" with you. Those are the conversations we enjoy most.
